The latest crash data from ICBC, released last week, show which intersections to watch out for in Greater Victoria.

We combined the data from every Greater Victoria municipality, and filtered out crashes involving only property damage to look at which intersections had had the most collisions with deaths or injury.

The single most dangerous intersection was where McKenzie Avenue meets the Trans Canada Highway. However, since the data covers a period beginning in 2017, that may not tell the whole story—the overpass was in service by mid-2020. That intersection had a total of 156 crashes involving an injury or death during the four years between 2017 and 2021.

But complex interchanges don't necessarily prevent crashes, the data shows.

The second-highest rate of injuries and deaths was in Langford, where the Trans Canada Highway meets the Veterans Memorial Parkway, with 132 such crashes. Likewise, another overpass (where the Patricia Bay Highway meets MacKenzie Avenue) had the fifth-highest rate, with 119 collisions involving a casualty.

Intersections where one of the roads had a speed limit of 80 km/h or higher made up four of the top five most dangerous—though excessive speeding has also plagued some of them. In March of 2021, a driver in a Mercedes coupe was driving at 178 km/h at the Patricia Bay Highway and MacKenzie Avenue, an 80 km/h zone, at 2am. He was given a $483 fine.

Several of the most dangerous intersections were on comparatively quiet intersections: North Dairy Road and Cedar Hill Road saw 104 of these serious collisions—eighth highest on our list—while Happy Valley Road and Sooke Road saw 87.

In total, the 15 intersections we looked at saw 1,527 collisions resulting in an injury or death over the four-year span.
