There are plenty of opportunities to dive deep into the history of residential schools, and the stories of survivors, and learn how to move toward reconciliation.
Songs for Truth and Reconciliation | Sunday | 2pm
A special event in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Hosted by Ry Moran, performing artists include čačumḥi aaron m. wells, mezzo soprano Marion Newman Nege’ga, Nicole Ermineskin (Nikky E) and Alex Taylor-McCallum, and Naomi Triebwasser (Nenagwas). Cash donations will be accepted at the entrance to the hall with proceeds to support local Indigenous organizations and initiatives. [Free]
South Island Powwow | Monday | 10am
Immerse yourself in local Indigenous culture with this powwow in honour of residential school survivors. Wear orange to acknowledge Truth and Reconciliation Day. Through song and dance, celebrate traditional Indigenous cultures and resiliency at Royal Athletic Park. [Free]
Xe Xe Smun’eem (Sacred Children) shirt sale | Monday
Buy a shirt from the organizers of Victoria Orange Shirt Day, who brought the event to the city in 2015. Founded by Eddy Charlie, a residential school survivor, and his friend Kristin Spray, the Xe Xe Smun’eem design—which currently flies at CRD headquarters—is available on T-shirts, blankets, and baby onesies. The items will be sold at the South Island Powwow on Monday, and are available for purchase online all year long. Proceeds of the sales go toward creating awareness of the effects of residential schools.
Truth and Reconciliation Ceremony in Oak Bay | Monday | 9:30am
A community ceremony will take place in front of the Sno’uyutth ("Spreading Good Energy") Welcome Pole at Oak Bay High School to reflect on and honour the day, the work ahead, and how we all can play a role in advancing Truth and Reconciliation in our community. [Free]
Truth and Reconciliation Day Ride | Monday | 9:45am
Capital Bike will again host a ride to honour survivors of residential schools on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a family-safe route that follows an accessible path from Songhees Park to Royal Athletic Park. [Free]
Sooke Library Truth and Reconciliation Day | Monday | 11am
The event includes moments for reflection, opportunities for dialogue, and shared resources to further our collective journey toward reconciliation. [Free]
Sugarcane at The Vic Theatre | Monday | 7:30pm
The theatre is bringing back the documentary for one night only to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. An investigation into a residential school sparks a reckoning on the nearby Sugarcane Reserve, near Williams Lake [Free]
Truth and Reconciliation Mural Project | Monday | 3-5pm
Visit the Oaklands Community Centre for an afternoon of reflection and celebrate the work of Coast Salish artist Andrea Fritz, whose new community mural will be installed outside the centre. The mural reveal will be both a celebration of Indigenous artistry and a reflection of Indigenous histories, presents, and futures. The unveiling ceremony will include a short talk by the artist, lively music, and delicious snacks and refreshments. [Free]
StoryWalk at Vancouver Island Regional Library | Every day until Oct. 6
Walk and read I Hope written by Monique Gray Smith and illustrated by Gabrielle Grimard. Take a moment to reflect on your hopes and wishes for all children at the library gardens in the Sidney and North Saanich branches. [Free]
