Saturday is Remembrance Day, an important yearly occasion to stop to think about those who have fought for peace in Canada and beyond.
While everyone is encouraged to take a moment of silence wherever they are at 11am, attending one of the many ceremonies throughout the CRD can offer a more impactful community experience. From wreath-laying ceremonies and parades, to veteran meetups and concerts, there are several ways this weekend to show thanks to those who have fought for us.
BC Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony | Saturday | 9:30am-12:30pm
The province’s official Remembrance Day ceremony will start with a parade at 9:30am, followed by a ceremony at 10:30am at the Victoria Cenotaph at the legislature. Parade route will run from Wharf to Government St., Belleville, Menzies, finishing at the Legislature Grounds.
Royal Roads Remembrance Day Ceremony | Saturday | 10:40am
Honour veterans at this ceremony in the Italian Gardens, hosted by the Ex-Cadet Club. Refreshments served at Hatley Castle will follow.
Saanich Ceremony | Saturday | 10:45am
The annual ceremony will take place at the Saanich Cenotaph at the Municipal Hall.
Oak Bay Ceremony | Saturday | 10:55am
Head to the Oak Bay Cenotaph at Cattle Point for this annual ceremony or watch virtually from home.
Central Saanich Ceremony | Saturday| 10:45am
The ceremony will start with a flyover at 10:45am, followed by a wreath laying at 10:50am at Pioneer Park in Brentwood Bay.
Sidney Parade and Ceremony | Saturday | 10:25am
Sidney’s parade will start at 10:25am at the Mary Winspear Centre, move to Beacon Avenue, Second Street, and conclude at the Cenotaph on Sidney Avenue. The ceremony will begin at 10:45am with a wreath laying, followed by a flyover during the two-minute silence at 11am.
Colwood Ceremony | Saturday| 10:45am
Join the 7th Juan de Fuca Scouts at the Colwood Cenotaph for a moment of silence. The scouts will march from John Stubbs School to the Cenotaph for a ceremony at approximately 10:45am, with a moment of silence at 11am.
Esquimalt Ceremony | Saturday | 10am-12pm
The day will start with a parade beginning at the Tudor House (Admirals and Esquimalt roads) at 10am, ending at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park where a wreath laying ceremony will take place.
Langford Ceremony | Saturday | 10:30am
Join the Langford community at Veterans Memorial Park for a ceremony, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Branch #91, at 10:30am. A two-minute moment of silence will take place at 11am.
Sooke Legion Service | Friday | 6pm
Royal Canadian Legion Branch #54 will host the first of its Remembrance Day events on Friday, with a solemn candlelit service.
Sooke Ceremony | Saturday | 10:35am
Sooke’s Remembrance Day will begin with a parade, starting at the Evergreen Mall at 10:35am, finishing at the cenotaph at 10:50am. A moment of silence will be observed at 11am, followed by a wreath laying. Refreshments will be offered afterward at Legion #54.
Hermann’s Remembrance Day Commemoration | Saturday | 7pm
Hear pop music from the ’30s and ’40s, tracks that would have uplifted soldiers during the Second World War, at Hermann’s.
Maritime Museum: Human Library | Saturday | 1:30-3:30pm
In a special Remembrance Day edition, the Maritime Museum will host a Human Library. Speak to veterans about their experiences, ask questions and learn directly from those being honoured on Saturday.
Remembrance Day Open House | Saturday | 9am-12pm.
The Royal Canadian Public Legion invites the public to attend an open house at Branch #127.
Remembrance Day concert and poppies | Saturday | 2:30pm
A Remembrance Day at Christ Church Cathedral concert will feature choral music to honour fallen veterans at 2:30pm. The cathedral has also been decorated with hundreds of handmade poppies created by members of its congregation. Members began making these poppies in January, with the final product displayed as an altar frontal. They’ll be on display all day Saturday until 4pm.
